Swinton Oatman, Registered Architect, first offered New England
period reproduction house designs in standard working drawings in
1977. Since that time, his designs have been featured in the "New
York Times-Home Section", "Boston Globe", "Boston
Herald", "Chicago Herald", "Des Moines Register",
"Phoenix Home & Garden", and national magazines, such
as "Colonial Homes", "Traditional Homes", "Early
American Life", "Country Living", "The Washingtonian",
"Victorian Homes", "Family Handyman", "Country
Home", "Texas Homes", and "The Journal of Light
Construction". A measure of his attention to proportion and
detail was the selection of Russell Swinton Oatman to create the
first museum-authorized reproduction houses for Old Sturbridge Village,
in Sturbridge, MA. We presently offer over one hundred designs of
modified reproduction period houses dating
from the late 1600's through the early 1900's.
Working from measured
drawings, the houses are adapted to today's basic code requirements;
living requirements; standard materials readily available; today's
platform framing techniques. Careful attention has been paid to
retaining, as far as possible, original proportions and detailing.
Mr. Oatman has long been
recognized as an outstanding designer of reproduction period houses.
His adaptation of the "Solomon Howes House" , in Chatham,
MA., has been used by Bow House, Inc. as a package house, under
written agreement, since 1972, in Bolton, MA., as well as being
offered as the "Old Ship's Bottom Roof House" through
our own collections.
Our working drawings
are complete, with full foundation, dimensioned framing, interior
and exterior elevations, all trim detail, door and window schedules.
Houses have been built from our standard plans as far away as Australia
and India, as well as throughout Canada and the United States.
